Nexis Uni

Summary

This report reflects the findings of a high-level assessment of the Nexus Uni platform for its conformance with the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 (WCAG 2.1).

There are very few issues with the Nexis Uni platform, however some essential WCAG 2.1 A and AA level requirements around information and relationships and color contrast do not meet compliance. Additionally, some other issues have been identified that while are not a direct SC violation, may help with the general usability of the site. Below are the most critical issues to address to improve system compliance.

Top Findings

1. Discernible Text: Screen readers need buttons, links, and other interactive elements to have discernible text to inform the user about the purpose and function of those elements. There are a few elements on the first three pages evaluated that are lacking a discernible text. Without this, navigation of the site and interaction with certain elements becomes extremely difficult or impossible.

2. PDF Content: The PDF that was evaluated as a part of this report does not appear to have been set up correctly for accessibility. This can make interacting with PDF content very difficult for users with a variety of disabilities and should be remediated in conformance with the Section 508 guidelines for PDF accessibility.

3. Focus Ring: While the current focus ring does technically meet the standard for conformance at the AA level, using the dotted outline is not as visible as a focus ring that has been designed to be contrast compliant. This would make keyboard navigation much easier for users with visual, physical, and cognitive disabilities, and is strongly recommended.

Best Practices

  • ARIA dialog and alert dialog nodes should have an accessible name
  • ARIA role presentation is not allowed for given element
  • ARIA roles should be appropriate for the element
  • Ensure elements marked as presentational are consistently ignored
  • Ensure landmarks are unique
  • Aside should not be contained in another landmark
  • Page should contain a level-one heading
