On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice published a revision to the ADA Title II regulation. This impacts public entity including public higher education institutions and libraries. Some brief points:
- The new rule is called Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability; Accessibility of Web Information and Services of State and Local Government Entities. Go to the full ruling or review the brief fact sheet.
- It requires web content and mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. It also emphasizes usability for people with disabilities, not simply conformance.
- It sets a compliance date of April 24, 2026 for most institutions. Some smaller libraries may have until April 24, 2027.
- It includes websites, documents, media, texts, and applications from vendors and by the public entities.
This will impact how and who we may conduct business with if we cannot guarantee compliance to ADA Title II.
